10k Race Information
Eligibility
To register, swimmers must meet the following requirements:
- First-time swimmers of the Horsetooth Open Water 10k Swim are required to obtain approval from George Thornton or Joe Bakel prior to registration. Please download and fill in the request form. Be sure to answer every section fully and completely. Email the completed form to info@horsetoothswim.com.
- First-time swimmers aged 14 to 17 who have not previously completed the Horsetooth 10k Open Water Swim are required to obtain approval and a parent or guardian must be in their escort watercraft. Please contact the race committee at info@horsetoothswim.com for additional details.
Race rules
- Swimmers must wear the race-provided swim cap.
- No MP3 players or similar devices are allowed.
- All WOWSA rules apply including swimsuit definitions. Exceptions and clarifications include:
- Drafting: Unlike many open water events, the Horsetooth Open Water Swims does not allow drafting except where unavoidable at the start. If flagrant drafting (of another swimmer or of the support craft) is observed, that swimmer will be disqualified.
- Swimsuits: WOWSA Marathon and Channel Rules state swimsuits shall not go beyond the end of the groin or shoulders. The Horsetooth Open Water Swims allows the swimsuit to extend to the knees.
- Wetsuits: There will be a limited number of wetsuit slots available (20). Wetsuit swimmers will not be eligible for an “official” swim. Wetsuit swimmers will not be eligible for awards. Wetsuit swimmers must supply their own paddler and watercraft (not eligible for organizer supplied paddler/craft).
Support Craft
Every swimmer must be accompanied by an Escort paddler (canoe, kayak, SUP) for the entire race. The paddler provides navigation, nutrition and visibility for safety. The swimmer may not touch or hold onto the support craft.
For those without access to a paddler, the race committee makes available up to 25 paddlers (first come / first served). Swimmers pay an extra fee for the use of the paddler and all of that fee is a donation to the charitable organization.
Race Check-in and Orientation/Safety Meeting
First-time Horsetooth 10K swimmers and everyone who has requested an organizer-supplied paddler are required to attend. Everyone else is invited/welcome to attend.
Swimmers who do not Check-in and attend the Orientation/Safety Meeting are required to attend the Orientation/Safety Webinar that will be held the week before the event. Remember, you must attend the Meeting on Saturday or the Webinar (or both if you want) in order to swim the 10K.
Race Check-in and the Orientation/Safety Meeting will take place at the
Translational Medicine Institute (TMI) at Colorado State University
Saturday, September 7, 2024, 4:00 pm
2350 Gillette Dr, Fort Collins, CO 80523
Race Check-in and the Orientation/Safety Meeting does not include dinner.
After the meeting, for an additional donation, the committee is offering a wonderful Italian dinner provided by Panino’s Italian Restaurant. There will be Gluten Free, Vegetarian, and Vegan options available. You are not obligated to attend this dinner, but encouraged! It’s a great way to meet other crazy open water swimmers!
Awards
First, second and third place men and women will receive a trophy. A traveling trophy, The Turner Cup, is awarded to the first man and first woman finisher.
